The club
Finding a place to get involved
I had become consumed with photography and learning the finer art when I decided I wanted to join a photography club. I was looking for an active club where I could become involved and, through my research, found Queensland Camera Group.
Martin was the president at the time. I sent an enquiry through the website and, within a couple of hours, he phoned me for a chat. It was rare to receive a call from anyone, so I was surprised. He was so lovely that I joined on the spot.
That was my experience with everyone in the club. I was made to feel welcome and quickly became involved where I could, entering the monthly challenges, attending meetings and joining club outings. I made long-lasting friends and looked for ways I could help.
When the club held its first gallery exhibition, I did not have my own photographs on display, but I still wanted to help. I created a short documentary about the exhibition, capturing the setup, interviews, b-roll and opening night, then worked with Anne on the narration and edited it all together.
Later that year, I was invited to join the committee. I lived about 50 minutes away, so I could not attend every activity in person and sometimes joined through Zoom. When the club needed a new Prism editor, I offered to take it on. It was something I felt confident doing and another way I could give back.
When I accepted the hospitality role at Sandstone Point Hotel, the hours made it much harder to attend and stay involved. The distance and work roster eventually led me to leave the club in early 2025.
Prism magazine
From newsletter to editorial magazine
When I took over as editor, Prism was a useful club newsletter made in Word. I rebuilt it in InDesign as a magazine with a stronger structure, clearer hierarchy and more room for the photography.
I wrote the event coverage, created a questionnaire for member spotlights, sourced and edited contributed stories, and brought each issue together. The work was part design, part editing and part finding the stories already sitting inside the club.

Gallery exhibition
Bringing the exhibition together on film
For the club's first gallery exhibition, I made a 30-minute film about the people and work behind it. I planned and filmed the setup, interviewed members and judges using my own camera and microphones, then captured the opening night and the details around the gallery.
Anne recorded the narration with me, and I edited the interviews, voiceover and b-roll into the finished film. It was later shown to the club.

Talks & tutorials
Turning an edit into something I could teach
I gave talks at Queensland Camera Group and another photography club about removing distractions from a photograph. The presentation covered decisions made while taking the photo as well as the editing tools available afterwards.
Before the talks, I recorded six guided edits using the same image: three in Lightroom and three in Photoshop. Each video was about eight minutes and focused on a different part of the process. One Lightroom guide is included here with the presentation.

Awards & recognition
A few awards that stood out
Being a member encouraged me to enter photography competitions. I received a number of awards over those three years, but these are the ones that meant the most.
Ekka, 2023
I won first place in the Open Digital category. The following year, one of my photographs was selected for the cover of the Ekka Photography Schedule.
The Societies, 2022
My pet portrait received a Gold Award from The Societies of Photographers in November 2022. Gold is a particularly difficult standard to achieve in the competition.
Queensland Camera Group, 2022 & 2024
I received the President's Trophy for Digital Projected Image of the Year for Fallen Leaves in Autumn Dreams in 2022. At the end of 2024, the club also gave me a QCG Club Spirit Award for the way I had helped and contributed.
